Killer driver who mowed down toddler has years shaved from sentence
An ice addict who mowed down and killed a toddler in western Sydney when he used a stolen car as a battering ram in a desperate attempt to run from police has had years shaved from his prison sentence.
Career criminal Christopher Chandler was jailed for a maximum term of 19 years for the senseless manslaughter of 17-month-old Tateolena Tauaifaga.
Chandler was behind the wheel of a stolen Audi in January 2015 when he was involved in a police chase while on bail for serious offences.
After being cornered in a dead-end street at Bessbrook Way in Constitution Hill, rather than surrender, he purposefully accelerated through a fence into the Tauaifaga’s family backyard.
He killed Tateolena Tauaifaga as well as terrifying other children who were in the yard.
Instead of stopping, he drove through the fence at the rear of the backyard into Richill Park, sending children and parents scurrying for safety.
During the chase, Chandler at times drove on the wrong side of the road, drove at 140km/h and ran through red lights before police called off the pursuit because of fears for the community. Read More…
