Kluane First Nation Secures 2024 Indigenous History Book Prize
The Kluane First Nation has been awarded the 2024 Indigenous History Book Prize for their outstanding work, "Lhù’ààn Mân Keyí Dań Kwánje Nààtsat: Kluane Lake Country People Speak Strong." This accolade, presented by the Indigenous History Group under the Canadian Historical Association Prizes, honors the best book on Indigenous history.
The book marks the 20th anniversary of the Kluane First Nation's self-governance agreement, which was signed in October 2003 and took effect in February 2004. Through narratives from elders, it offers rich stories and insights about their land and the journey toward self-governance.
Enriched by the narratives of elders, the book delves into the cultural heritage and chronicles the journey toward self-governance, offering a vivid tableau of the land and its people.
At the award ceremony in Montreal, the Canadian Historical Association extolled the book, stating, "Lhù'ààn Mân Keyí Dań Kwánje Nààtsat: Kluane Lake Country People Speak Strong is a quintessentially collaborative, multidisciplinary, historical, forward-thinking, and imaginative creation with extensive appeal."
The Kluane First Nation stands as one of the eleven self-governing First Nations in the Yukon, a testament to their enduring legacy and autonomous governance.
