‘Lightyear' can now be viewed in Malaysia – with some caveats
It appears that even though it was pulled from Malaysian silver screens, the Pixar film “Lightyear” will still be reaching local audiences.
However, there are some conditions: the animated flick will only be available for those who subscribe to Disney’s streaming service, Disney+ Hotstar.
Also, at the time of writing, the Buzz-y “Toy Story” spinoff has been given an 18+ rating, ostensibly with no cuts made. Given that Pixar films have often been given G or PG ratings, the high age rating is a definite oddity.
“Lightyear”, originally scheduled for a theatrical release in June, had reportedly run afoul of the Malaysian censorship board, which took issue with the depiction of a same-sex couple.
In the film, the title character is close friends with a female space ranger who is married to another woman.
A brief kiss between the couple was deemed unacceptable by Malaysian censors, which requested that the scene be cut before its release. Disney refused to allow this, ultimately choosing to cancel the release of the movie in Malaysia. Read More...
