“Lost Illusionsâ€, “Annetteâ€, “Aline†and “Bac Nord†top the nominations
French cinema forgets the pandemic for a moment with the publication this Wednesday of the films and artists nominated for the Césars, a year after the coronation ofGoodbye Cons by Albert Dupontel.
Lost illusions, an ambitious adaptation of Balzac by Xavier Giannoli, tops the list with 15 nominations. rock opera Annette by Leos Carax, Aline, Valérie Lemercier’s biopic about her idol Celine Dion, and North ferry, whose vision of the cities of Marseilles has caused much ink to flow, follow, with respectively 11, 10 and 7 nominations.
The divide of Catherine Corsini, who listens to the divisions of France at the time of the “Yellow Vests” during a night in the hospital, gets 6 nominations, while The Olympiads, a black and white romantic comedy by Jacques Audiard, and Black Box, with Pierre Niney as a paranoid air traffic controller, received 5. Titanium, the Palme d’Or in Cannes, and The Event, a punchy film about abortion, Golden Lion in Venice, are content with four nominations each.
Renewed to respond to accusations of opacity, inter-self and machismo, the Académie des César shows that it has changed, by naming more films made by women this year. Three directors – Julia Ducournau, Audrey Diwan and Valérie Lemercier – are also in the running in the category of “best director”. Only one filmmaker has received the César for best achievement so far: Tonie Marshall in 2000.
