Acclaimed author and illustrator Mark Crilley has crafted a love letter to the land of Taiwan and its inhabitants. Lost in Taiwan, coming out on May 23, 2023, is a graphic novel loosely based on Crilley's experience living in Taiwan in his youth as an English teacher.
Mark Crilley is perhaps most famous for his best-selling books on how to draw in manga style (the Mastering Manga series) and for his drawing tutorials on YouTube that have garnered millions of views. However, is also the Eisner Award-nominated author behind Akiko, Miki Falls, and Brody's Ghost. Crilley's latest endeavor is Lost in Taiwan, coming out in May 2023 from Little Brown, and it's a highly suggested read for comic book fans who are curious about the Eastern world whose influences are so abundant in Crilley's work.
Lost In Taiwan Shows The Importance Of Stepping Out Of The Comfort Zone

Lost in Taiwan follows a special day in the life of Paul, a young boy who struggles to have friends outside the world of online gaming and chats. Paul is visiting his brother, Theo, who has moved to Changbei for a teaching job. However, Paul refuses to go out and engage with the local culture, spending all day playing video games on the couch and eating McDonald's food. He is literally pushed out of his comfort zone when, looking for a gaming console that's supposedly sold only in Taiwan, he breaks his phone and gets lost in the city. Paul is rescued by Peijing, a local girl who speaks fluent English and takes care of him for the entire day, showing him the beauty of Taiwan and the importance of opening his mind to the world.
