Lt Governor Approves 200 Additional PGT Positions in Delhi Government Schools
In a significant effort to bolster the education sector, Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena has sanctioned the creation of 200 additional Post Graduate Teacher (PGT) positions in Delhi government schools. This announcement was made through a statement from Raj Niwas on Saturday.
The newly approved PGT positions will serve secondary and senior secondary levels under the Delhi Directorate of Education. These roles will be classified under pay matrix level 8, with a salary range of Rs 47,600 to Rs 1,51,100. The initiative aims to improve the quality of education in the capital's government schools by addressing issues such as favoritism, corruption, reservation violations, and employee harassment, which are often linked to non-permanent roles.
Currently, more than 9,500 Children with Disabilities (CwD) are enrolled in classes 9 to 12 in Delhi government schools. However, there is a shortage of special education teachers, with only 283 PGTs for Special Education employed against 301 sanctioned posts. This shortfall has posed challenges for the 609 government schools in the capital that cater to CwD at the senior secondary level, impacting their ability to meet the daily needs of inclusive education.
The newly sanctioned positions will help strengthen the workforce, ensuring effective implementation of the government's inclusive education policies in accordance with the Right to Education Act 2009, the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, and the National Education Policy 2020.
The decision to create these positions resulted from a collaborative assessment process conducted by the Directorate of Education in consultation with the Administrative Reform, Planning, and Finance Departments of the Delhi government.
Lieutenant Governor Saxena has also emphasized the importance of promptly filling vacant positions in government schools across Delhi through exams conducted by the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB). The ongoing recruitment drive aims to address further vacancies, including those for Post Graduate Teachers, Trained Graduate Teachers, and Nursery Teachers in the capital's government schools. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance educational resources and support inclusive education in Delhi.
