Malaysia's Historic Victory at the International MLBB Cup
The Selangor Red Giants (SRG) have made history by securing Malaysia's first-ever major international trophy in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB). In a dramatic final at the 2024 MLBB Mid Season Cup held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the SRG team triumphed over the reigning world champions, Philippines' AP Bren, with a score of 4-3.
This landmark victory earned the Selangor Red Giants a substantial prize of USD 1 million, approximately RM 4.6 million, while AP Bren received USD 500,000 (RM 2.3 million). The official MLBB tournament page hailed the achievement, stating, "The Red Giants have proven to the world that Malaysia is a formidable contender on the international stage, securing the first-ever international trophy for their region!"
In addition to the team’s historic win, SRG player Haqqullah Ahmad Shahrul Zaman, known in the gaming world as Sekysss, was honored as the tournament MVP. Sekysss's exceptional performance, marked by flawless retributions, controlled aggression, and world-class mechanics, earned him this prestigious title. The MLBB tournament hosts praised him, saying, "Sekysss is our 2024 MLBB Mid Season Cup Finals MVP!"
During the post-match interview, the 18-year-old Sekysss expressed his elation. "I feel like I am dreaming right now because this is my first international tournament, and we are the champions," he said, according to the New Straits Times. He continued, "We proved to all the netizens who predicted Malaysia would lose 4-0 to AP Bren wrong. Alhamdulillah, thank you to all the Malaysian fans who supported us."
This victory not only highlights the growing prowess of Malaysian esports but also marks a significant milestone for the country's presence in the global gaming arena.
