Malaysia urged to 'diversify' into other sports
Not just badminton, weightlifting and diving, Malaysia should look beyond the three sports for gold medals at the Commonwealth Games.
This was stated by sports analyst Dr Pekan Ramli after the quadrennial Games ended on Monday with Malaysia winning seven gold, eight silver and eight bronze to finish 10th among 43 nations.
Pekan said with the Games standards increasing in each edition, it is important that Malaysia's sporting authorities ramp up the development of athletes in other sports to remain competitive.
Malaysia's performance in Birmingham marginally surpassed the six-gold target set by the Sports Ministry, Olympic Council of Malaysia and National Sports Council.
"Overall, surpassing the medal target was a positive. However, I was quite surprised to see a number of athletes, earmarked for gold, failing to deliver," he said yesterday.
"Ever since the 1990s, we have been depending on badminton and weightlifting, due to our advantage in certain weight classes, for gold.
