Mali to Establish State-Owned Airline
Mali has announced plans to establish a state-owned airline, Mali Airlines-SA, aimed at servicing the vast, landlocked West African country more than a decade after the closure of its last national airline. The government made the announcement, although it provided limited details regarding the new airline's operations.
Mali, which spans an area five times the size of Britain, shares a 7,420-kilometer (4,610-mile) border with seven countries. Given the challenges of road travel in the region, particularly due to ongoing security issues, the establishment of a national airline is seen as a crucial step in improving connectivity. The country has been grappling with a separatist rebellion and insurgencies by jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and ISIS, which have posed significant threats to safety and stability.
The recent surge in violence, including attacks by ethnic Tuareg rebels and Islamist fighters that have resulted in the deaths of numerous Malian soldiers and their Russian allies, underscores the need for safer travel options. Road travel has become increasingly perilous, making air travel a more viable alternative for both domestic and regional connectivity.
During their weekly meeting on Wednesday, the Council of Ministers adopted draft texts concerning the creation and approval of the new airline. This initiative comes at a time when Mali is facing various logistical challenges, including a recent incident in July when the country was unable to refuel commercial aircraft in its capital, Bamako, due to fuel shortages. Airlines were advised to refuel elsewhere for a one-week period, highlighting the need for improved infrastructure and services.
The establishment of Mali Airlines-SA is expected to enhance regional travel and support the country's economic development, providing a much-needed boost to connectivity in a region where safe and reliable transportation options are limited. As the government moves forward with this initiative, it aims to address the pressing transportation needs of its citizens and improve access to neighboring countries.
