Memphis Depay gets off the mark
There has been no doubting the fact that Memphis Depay is an exciting addition to the Manchester United side and fans around the globe will be heartened to see the 21-year-old off the mark already for the club.
Memphis displayed his goalscoring prowess with former club PSV Eindhoven and was the leading marksman in last term's Eredivisie. So it should have come as no surprise when he looked a major threat against San Jose Earthquakes when operating behind Wayne Rooney in attack.
Louis van Gaal has already indicated he could deploy Depay centrally and Memphis makes things happen. Bright and positive, his pace and direct nature of his work ensures the opposition defence is stretched and chances naturally follow.
He'd already seen a shot saved by Quakes keeper David Bingham when it initially appeared he had opened his United account by touching home Juan Mata's dangerous ball goalwards. But MUTV replays confirmed the Netherlands international failed to connect, with the Spaniard's effort going in off a post.
Less than four minutes later, Memphis did have his goal. It owed much to a sloppy backpass by Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi but there was no mistaking the confidence and quality of the finish. The Dutchman opened up his body and rolled the ball past Bingham as though it came naturally to the youngster.
It was the sort of instinctive action that promises much and the goal clearly meant a lot to him as he enjoyed the moment. Entertaining and productive, we look forward to more of the same from the dazzling forward.
