Moldova Summons Russian Ambassador After Drones Explode on Its Territory
Moldova has summoned Russia's ambassador following incidents involving Russian drones that crashed and exploded on its territory. This escalation comes amid increasing airspace violations in the region since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with Moscow frequently targeting Ukrainian port infrastructure near the borders of both Moldova and Romania.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu condemned the actions on social media, stating, "Shahed drones violated our airspace, two exploded on our soil, putting Moldovan lives at risk." In response, Moldova's Foreign Ministry formally summoned the Russian ambassador to demand an explanation and to "strongly protest these unacceptable actions." This is not the first time the ambassador has been called in over similar incidents.
According to Moldova's border police, "several" drones crossed into its airspace overnight, with two crashing in fields. Authorities later reported finding additional drone fragments in a third location. Fortunately, no casualties were reported as a result of these incidents.
In a related development, Romania's Defense Ministry announced that radar systems detected "an aerial target that briefly crossed national airspace" near the Ukrainian port of Reni overnight. Romanian officials have initiated a search for a potential impact site. As a NATO member, Romania condemned Russia's ongoing attacks on Ukraine, which have raised security concerns along the military alliance's eastern flank.
The situation underscores the heightened tensions in the region and the ongoing risks posed by the conflict in Ukraine, as neighboring countries grapple with the implications of military actions spilling over their borders.
