Moroccan Politician Mohamed Mobdii Arrested on Corruption Charges
Mohamed Mobdii, the Head of the Populist Movement Party and President of the City Council in Faqih Bensalah, was arrested on Wednesday on charges of corruption. Reports suggest that he was taken into custody by the police department in Casablanca after being arrested at his residence at 11:30 a.m. The arrest was made in connection with a corruption case that was first filed in 2020.
Mobdii had resigned from his position as the chair of the Justice, Legislation, and Human Rights Committee in Morocco's House of Representatives the day before his arrest. The corruption case against Mobdii relates to allegations of waste of public funds, illegal enrichment, and violation of the law on public procurement, among others. The case was filed by the Moroccan Association for the Protection of Public Funds.
Mobdii had been in charge of managing the city council in Faqih Ben Saleh for 23 years. The association's complaint was based on reports from the Interior Ministry, which revealed a list of violations related to public construction deals in the city. The Supreme Council of Accounts also reported several irregularities in the management of the small city during Mobdii's tenure.
According to the Interior Ministry's report, over MAD 5 million ($496,770) was spent on construction projects that were left unfinished during Mobdii's term. The Supreme Council of Accounts' report stated that Mobdii had wasted billions of public funds on a fake study while he was the Minister of Public Service.
In conclusion, Mobdii's arrest highlights the ongoing fight against corruption in Morocco. It also emphasizes the need for transparency and accountability in public offices.
