Navy accompanies Russian ships off Portuguese coast

The Navy accompanied and monitored the passage of four Russian ships along the Portuguese coast, announced the office of the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Gouveia e Melo.
The Frigate Corte-Real accompanied a naval force from the Russian Federation, made up of three frigates and a tanker, which sailed in transit off the Portuguese mainland coast, said the Navy.
The monitoring of Russian naval units stems from the “defense of national interests and the exercise of State authority at sea”, according to the same source, which did not specify the date, nor the location, in which the transit of Russian ships along the national coast took place.
"It is a procedure that represents a strong contribution to world security and deterrence, also demonstrating Portugal's commitment to the collective effort of the Alliance in maintaining maritime situational awareness", reads the press release.
