New Zealand: Wayne Shelford finally receives his knighthood
The talismanic number eight had been given the award last year in the Queen’s birthday honours list, but the investiture was delayed due to the Covid pandemic.

Shelford made his debut for New Zealand in 1985, playing 22 Tests and 48 matches for his country.
Widely regarded as one of the all-time great number eights, he is also credited with the revival of the ‘Ka Mate’ haka as a pre-match ritual.
He was dropped in controversial circumstances in 1990, having captained the All Blacks for three undefeated years.
Signs would appear at grounds subsequently reading ‘Bring back Buck’ and still occasionally appear when the team is on a poor run of form.
He later played for Northampton, where he is also held in huge esteem and spent a time at Saracens as a coach. Read More…
