Nicolás Maduro to appear 13 times on the Ballot for Venezuela’s Presidential Election
In the upcoming Venezuelan presidential election on July 28, incumbent Nicolás Maduro will dominate the ballot with his name appearing 13 times. This is due to the support he has garnered from multiple political groups, allowing his image and name to fill the entire first row of the ballot's four rows.
Maduro faces nine challengers, but the most notable contender is former diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia, who appears three times on the ballot as the representative of the opposition’s Unitary Platform coalition. Another candidate, Luis Martínez of the Democratic Action party, which is considered allied with the government, appears six times.
This election is seen as a crucial test for Venezuela, as it could either extend Maduro’s presidency by another six years or bring about a change in leadership amidst ongoing economic and political turmoil.
The electoral rules in Venezuela permit candidates to appear on the ballot as many times as they are backed by different parties, leading to the current distribution where Maduro's presence is heavily felt.
Venezuela has an estimated 17 million eligible voters, with an additional 4 million registered to vote abroad. However, only about 69,000 of those living abroad met the government-set requirements to cast their ballots, due to stringent and costly registration processes, lack of information, and the need for proof of legal residency in their host countries.
