One in Four Citizens of Montenegro Holds a University Degree
According to the 2023 Census of Population, Households, and Apartments in Montenegro, a significant 26.2% of the population has completed higher education, indicating that one in four citizens holds a university degree. This statistic highlights the growing emphasis on education within the country.
Among residents aged 15 and over, the census reveals that 52.8% have completed secondary school, while 17.8% have only completed primary school. The data also shows notable regional disparities in educational attainment, with Budva leading the way at 39.9% of its population holding higher education degrees, in stark contrast to Petnjica, where only 6.3% have achieved the same level of education.
The census data further indicates that 94.3% of the population aged 20-24 has at least completed secondary education, which is significantly higher than the EU average of 84%. This suggests a strong foundation for the younger generation in Montenegro, positioning them well for future educational and employment opportunities.
The age group of 30-34 years has the highest proportion of university graduates, with 45.7% holding a degree. Additionally, 44.4% of the population aged 25-34 has completed higher education, slightly exceeding the EU average of 43%. This trend reflects a positive shift towards higher education among younger Montenegrins.
Despite these encouraging statistics, the census also identified 4,732 citizens without any formal education, highlighting an area that requires attention and improvement. Addressing educational disparities and ensuring access to quality education for all citizens remains a crucial challenge for Montenegro.
The findings from the 2023 Census underscore the importance of higher education in Montenegro, with a notable portion of the population achieving university degrees. As the country continues to develop its educational framework, efforts to enhance access to education and support for those without formal qualifications will be essential in fostering a more educated and skilled workforce.
