Paintings By Grimsby Grocer Herbert Rollett To Be Auctioned
An assortment of paintings created by an artist who led a dual life as a grocer is set to be auctioned after being unearthed in his granddaughter's residence.
Herbert Rollett would rise at the early hour of 05:30 to capture the essence of the Lincolnshire landscape on canvas before commencing his duties at his shop in Grimsby. His artistic endeavors gained recognition in the 1920s when his works were showcased at esteemed establishments such as the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon.
Following the passing of his granddaughter, a remarkable collection of over 12 artworks was stumbled upon, adorning the walls of her retirement flat in Essex. The revelation caught the clearance team off guard, as auctioneer James Laverack recounted, "They were completely taken aback by the discovery in the Saffron Walden flat - unaware of the abundance of art within and oblivious to the existence of Herbert Rollett. However, they decided to conduct an online search and gradually grasped the significance of their findings."
Rollett, born into a farming family in 1872 in Lincolnshire, was entirely self-taught and only embarked on his artistic journey in his thirties. He exhibited his creations in local showcases and art exhibitions throughout the nation. Regrettably, he passed away in 1932.
The upcoming auction not only features Rollett's works but also encompasses sketchbooks and artworks crafted by his daughter, Kathleen, who also possessed a flair for artistry. Numerous pieces from the collection were prominently displayed in a comprehensive exhibition of Rollett's oeuvre at the Welholme Gallery in Grimsby in 1988.
Mr. Laverack expressed his awe, stating, "This truly is an exceptional compilation of artwork by an exceptionally talented artist. It is remarkable to contemplate how this man dutifully served groceries in a Lincolnshire shop while his masterpieces graced the walls of the renowned Royal Academy and the prestigious Paris Salon."
The auction, organized by John Taylors Auctioneers in Louth, is scheduled for a later date.
