Peruvian Gerónimo Hamann shone in the Copa América of Coastal Rowing
In a remarkable display of determination and unwavering perseverance, Gerónimo Hamann, a rower from Peru, proudly hoisted the flag of victory in the Coastal Rowing Copa América. The event, organized by the Regatas Lima club, secured him the silver medal and a coveted qualification for the Bali 2023 World Beach Games, set to be held in Indonesia.
Despite the thick fog that engulfed the entire Peruvian coast, Gerónimo Hamann overcame the challenge and reached the finish line in an admirable position. Engaging in a fierce competition on the second day of the Coastal Rowing Copa América, he faced off against Marco Sarraute from Uruguay in the Beach Sprint category. Sarraute claimed the gold medal, triumphing over a 250-meter course.
Hamann's accomplishment gained significant recognition, as he not only secured the silver medal but also earned a spot in the qualifiers for the Bali 2023 World Beach Games, scheduled to take place from August 5th to 12th.
"Wearing the national jersey and representing my country fills me with an indescribable sense of pride. Since 2012, I have had the privilege of participating in various tournaments, and starting from tomorrow until August, I will dedicate myself to working towards my dream of winning the gold medal and hearing the National Anthem during the awards ceremony," expressed an emotional Hamann.
Reflecting on his participation in the competition, Hamann emphasized his commitment to giving his best and qualifying for the world championship.
"I have many areas to improve upon. I will retain all the positive aspects in terms of strength and skill. I fought relentlessly in every race, striving to enhance my times. There was a minor setback with a wave, but such mistakes teach us how to navigate better because a race is determined by mere fractions of a second. I am confident that I will continue to better myself," stated the national champion.
On the other hand, Marcos Sarraute, the Uruguayan participant, acknowledged the level of competition and the strenuous effort required to emerge victorious.
"Attaining this result was challenging since I had to compete in the repechage due to an error on the first day. Presently, I am savoring the victory as I had feared the worst outcome. Rowing is a combination of madness and tranquility. This achievement came through relentless effort and unwavering perseverance," she shared.
In a similar vein, Christine Cavallo from the United States showcased exceptional skill as she triumphed over her Uruguayan counterpart, Romina Cetraro, claiming the top spot on the podium in the CW1X female category. Both athletes secured their place in the upcoming World Beach Games. Gabriela Bahamonde from Chile secured the third position, closely followed by Verónica Toro from Puerto Rico.
Looking ahead, the forthcoming event on Sunday, the 7th, will feature the Endurance 6K race. Crews will navigate a course marked by buoys and turning points in the open sea within the bay of Chorrillos, situated in front of the facilities of the Club de Regatas Lima. Participants in the C1x, C2x, C4x+, Mixed C2x, and C4x/+ categories, both male and female, will partake in this challenging competition.
