Portugal to rebuild schools in Ukraine
Ukrainian authorities reported one thousand two hundred educational institutions had been destroyed since the start of Russia’s war on 24 February.
In the Jitomir region, the attacks have destroyed 70 schools, which, according to Costa, present different levels of destruction.
“We will focus our support on a specific region, Jitomir, where we already have a mapping study of schools where we can intervene,” the education minister, who is participating in the Lugano Conference in Switzerland told Lusa.
According to Costa, the preparatory project for the reconstruction of the schools “has already started,” in a joint project of the Portuguese government and ministry of education, through Parque Escolar, with the Ukrainian authorities.
Portugal and other countries will be responsible for renovating educational establishments from nurseries to secondary schools. The number of schools to be renovated by Portugal is still being studied.
“It will be the technical work to define our level of intervention and financial support,” explained the minister.
The minister also stressed that this project has to ensure a “balance between a recovery that Ukraine wants to be relatively fast and the principles of quality and safety of the buildings themselves.” Read More…
