Prada collaborates with Cassius Hirst - aka Cass - for a limited edition capsule that reinvents the iconic sneaker of the 90s
Take one of the most famous Prada sneakers of the 90s, add the creativity of a very young artist, several cans of spray paint and a background music that mixes drum machines and synthesizers. What comes out - ingenious in this case is the union of the two parts - is a very limited edition capsule that reinvents according to Cass's precise vision the iconic Prada America's Cup sneaker , the one created for the crew of Luna Rossa and then it became a viral phenomenon impossible to forget.

The meeting between the 22-year-old son of Damien Hirst and the Prada maison, born almost by chance about three years ago, led to the genesis of four models, in 22 variants, for a total of 3,000 pairs worldwide. Few, very few, if we consider the growth potential of the young Hirst and the ever faster evolution of the reselling market. Cassius, among other things, is well known in the sector and thanks to the work of hand painting on the sneakers has already gained a good following. The first painted model? At 14, a gift for his father. The others, all unique pieces, ended up in the hands of stars such as A $ AP Rocky, Playboi Carti, Offset, Rihanna and AJ Tracey.

"The Cass x Prada collection finds parallels between the daring work of a new talent and Prada's heritage: the sense of dexterity, excellence in manufacturing, the constant search for innovation, the restless urge to re-examine and reinvent our story. In this case, the iconic silhouette of the Prada America's Cup sneaker becomes a canvas on which to create, proposed in a special capsule collection. Something unique and new ”, declared Lorenzo Bertelli , Marketing Director & Head of Corporate Social Responsibility of the Prada Group.

The collaboration with Prada, at this point in his career, marks an important turning point. The collection, which reflects the artisan tradition of Made in Italy in every detail, represents the artist's first true series, with exclusive models featuring individually signed CASS labels. The launch campaign created by Axel Morin also reflects the soul of the project, with a surreal performance, customized masks and music created specifically for the occasion. The interview with Cassius Hirst
How did the collaboration with Prada for this project begin?
I was painting the Air Force 1, taking pictures and turning them into very complex vinyl stencils, which then became abstract drawings. I covered a part of the shoe and wrapped it with the stencil, protecting only a part of it, the result was crazy. I photographed every step of this experiment and sent one of the photos to my father [Damien Hirst]. He then sent it to Miuccia [Prada], who said: "It's great, let's do something with it." So we went to Italy, to the factory where Prada produces shoes, and I chose some models. This all goes back to about three years ago, if I'm not mistaken. The Prada America's Cups are totally different from other sneakers. At first I was a bit confused and thought: what can I come up with? I explored 3D design, I tried to insert one shoe into the other and create a new model that contained the essence of both. The idea seemed very Prada to me, but it was really excessive. So I started painting, I painted 44 shoes, made several tests, I reduced the choice to 22 pieces and then I worked with the factory to reproduce them. Read More...
