President Biden will meet Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the White House on May 16, Press Secretary Jen Psaki announced Thursday.
According to the announcement, the meeting provides an opportunity to “affirm our strong bilateral partnership and to celebrate 201 years of Greek independence.”
“President Biden looks forward to welcoming Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of Greece to the White House on May 16, 2022. The Prime Minister’s visit provides an opportunity to affirm our strong bilateral partnership and to celebrate 201 years of Greek independence,” said the White House.
Biden, Mitsotakis to discuss support for Ukraine
“The leaders will discuss ongoing efforts with Allies and partners to support the people of Ukraine and impose economic costs on Russia for its unprovoked aggression. They will discuss our close cooperation on global challenges, including climate change and energy security. The leaders will take stock of our joint efforts to promote global security through NATO, as well as our shared goals for peace and prosperity in the region. They will also celebrate the history, democratic values, and trade and investment links that have united our peoples and countries for generations,” the White House added.
In a statement late on Thursday, Mitsotakis’s office also announced the date of the meeting and said that the visit to the White House follows an invitation by the US president.
Blinken thanked Greece for its support of Ukraine
Earlier on Thursday Mitsotakis spoke with United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken and “discussed additional ways to assist Ukraine as it defends itself against Russia’s unprovoked and brutal war,” according to a State Department statement.
Blinken thanked Greece for its “steadfast support to Ukraine, including Greece’s strong sanctions enforcement and its extensive humanitarian and defensive assistance,” the statement said, while they also discussed the upcoming meeting of the 3+1 mechanism (Greece, Cyprus, Israel, and the US) to strengthen energy and economic cooperation between the participants and advance regional stability and prosperity.
