Priest Stabbed in Singapore During Mass, Now in Stable Condition
A priest in Singapore, Father Christopher Lee, was stabbed during a Mass on Saturday evening by a knife-wielding assailant. The 57-year-old parish priest of St Joseph’s Church is currently in stable condition following the attack. The 37-year-old attacker was subdued by parishioners and subsequently arrested.
Cardinal William Goh, the Archbishop of Singapore, expressed concern over the incident, stating, “This incident has not only grievously injured a religious leader in a place of worship, but has sown fear in the community.” He emphasized the need for reflection on the safety and security of churches, particularly during worship services.
Father Lee is described as a well-loved figure within the parish, known for his kindness and compassion. He is also a member of the Archdiocesan Liturgy Commission and serves as a school chaplain for De La Salle School.
According to police reports, the attacker has a history of serious offenses, including past incidents related to drug misuse. Preliminary investigations suggest that he acted alone, and authorities do not currently suspect the attack to be an act of terrorism. The police have urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation as they continue to investigate the motive behind the attack.
In his statement, Cardinal Goh acknowledged the potential for violence in sacred spaces, noting that various factors could lead someone to attack a religious leader. He highlighted the importance of being prepared as a community to guard against such incidents while also recognizing that churches are public spaces. He cautioned against excessive security measures that could deter worshippers from attending services.
Goh emphasized the need for religious leaders to balance security with their pastoral duties, stating, “While we should not take security lightly, we must minister to our flock courageously and without fear.” He expressed a belief that, despite the presence of evil, faith should not be paralyzed by fear, and that the Church must continue to proclaim the Gospel.
The cardinal reflected on the moral decline in society, suggesting that such violent acts are indicative of deeper issues within the community. He called for a renewed commitment to spreading messages of mercy, compassion, and reconciliation to help heal those who are troubled and confused.
In conclusion, Cardinal Goh urged the faithful to remain steadfast in their beliefs and to continue witnessing their faith, placing their trust in God amidst the challenges they face.
