Putin justifies Ukraine invasion in Moscow military parade speech
Russian President Vladimir Putin (C) speaks during the Victory Day military parade in Moscow, Russia, May 9, 2023.
Russian President Vladimir Putin justified Russia's invasion of Ukraine during the May 9 military parade commemorating the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. Putin referred to the fighting in Ukraine, which he initiated over a year ago, as a "real war" and claimed that it was being waged against Russia. He stated that Russia had repelled international terrorism and would protect the residents of Donbass while ensuring the country's security.
Putin also claimed that Ukraine had become a "hostage" of Western states seeking to destroy Russia and that their goal was the "disintegration and destruction" of his country. Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, allegedly in response to the perceived threat from the West.
The military parade on Red Square involved approximately 8,000 soldiers, some of whom had recently fought in Ukraine. There was no air show, despite clear skies, as seen in the live broadcast on Russian television.
