The total investment in this ambitious project amounts to €5.1 million.
Project Details
The six-building complex, situated at Brīvības Street 128 and Tallinas Street 26, will retain its authentic architectural features while being fully adapted into 67 modern apartments. The total area undergoing renovation spans 3,132 square meters. The scope of work includes:
- Façade Restoration: Preserving the historical exterior while ensuring structural integrity.
- Modernization of Engineering Systems: Upgrading utilities and infrastructure to meet contemporary standards.
- Courtyard Landscaping: Enhancing outdoor spaces for residents and visitors.
- Construction of Parking Spaces: Addressing the need for convenient parking in the urban environment.
- Installation of Façade Lighting: Improving the aesthetic appeal and safety of the buildings at night.
Rita Maizenberga, co-owner of Renoberg Estate, emphasized the significance of this renovation project, stating, “The revitalization of this quarter is more than just a renovation – it is a chance to redefine what it means to live in Riga’s historic centre. Brīvības Street is one of the city’s most iconic locations, and we are proud to contribute to its renewal and future growth. By restoring this architectural ensemble, we are not only preserving Riga’s heritage but also helping shape a new level of quality in the urban environment. We believe this project will serve as a strong example and a positive impulse for Brīvības Street and beyond.”
The buildings in the Stefan's Houses complex date back to 1887, when the first residential and commercial structure was constructed, designed by the German-born architect Otto Dietze. In 1902, another building was added, designed by Konstantīns Pēkšēns, one of Latvia’s most influential architects. Pēkšēns is renowned for his elegant balance of classical aesthetics and functionality, having authored more than 250 buildings in Rīga, including the main building of the University of Latvia.
Over the years, the buildings have served various public and commercial functions. In the 1920s and 1930s, the site was home to calligraphy courses led by educator Kārlis Kristbergs, as well as a private kindergarten and preschool founded by his wife, Otīlija Kristberga-Melne. The complex has also housed a guesthouse operated by E. Lapiņš and several retail outlets, including the “Kārlis Bērziņš” department store and Anton Naglovskis’ lamp and glassware shop.
The renovation of the Stefan's Houses quarter represents a significant investment in Rīga’s architectural heritage and urban development. By preserving the historical essence of the buildings while modernizing them for contemporary living, Renoberg Estate aims to enhance the quality of life in the city’s historic center. This project not only honors the past but also paves the way for a vibrant future in one of Rīga’s most iconic neighborhoods. As the renovation progresses, it will be exciting to see how this historic quarter transforms and contributes to the urban landscape of Rīga.
