Born on May 8, 1941, in the Mercato area of Addis Ababa, Mahmud's early life was marked by various jobs, including working as a shoeshiner. His entry into the music world was serendipitous; while serving sandwiches at a club, he encountered the legendary Ethiopian musician Tilahun Gesese, whose performance ignited Mahmud's passion for music.
Reflecting on his career in a 2018 interview with ETV, Mahmud acknowledged the challenges he faced but also highlighted the supportive environment that existed for musicians at the time. He credited traditional musicians for laying the groundwork for modern Ethiopian music, which has greatly influenced his work.
Mahmud Ahmed gained international acclaim in 1976 when the Belgian record label Kremers released an LP featuring two of his songs. The album received excellent reviews and made it into the top 10 world music charts, even being featured in The New York Times. This success solidified his reputation as a significant figure in both Ethiopian and world music.
Over the years, Mahmud released more than 20 albums and performed at numerous local and international concerts. In the 1980s, he operated a music store in the Piazza district of Addis Ababa while continuing his music career. His popularity extended beyond Ethiopia, particularly among the Ethiopian diaspora, as he became one of the first Ethiopian musicians to perform in the United States during a tour with the Walias Band, Getatchew Kassa, and Webeshet Fisseha.
Mahmud's international fame soared in the late 1990s, especially after the release of the Éthiopiques series by Buda Musique, which introduced his music to a global audience. He toured extensively with groups such as Boston’s Either/Orchestra and the Badume Band, further cementing his status as an ambassador for Ethiopian music worldwide.
As Mahmud prepares to step away from the stage, his influence on Ethiopian music remains immeasurable. His contributions to the global recognition of Ethiopian culture are unparalleled, and his legacy as one of the greatest Ethiopian musicians of all time is firmly established.
