Rescue of Emaciated and Undernourished Sloth in Peru
In a recent operation, a juvenile female sloth was saved from dire conditions in Peru. Upon its rescue, the sloth exhibited alarming symptoms, including a body temperature of 21 degrees Celsius (69.8 degrees Fahrenheit). To restore its health, the sloth was immediately placed in an incubator designed to replicate the warm and humid climate of the jungle.
Veterinarians associated with the Peruvian National Forest and Wildlife Service examined the sloth and discovered clear indications of malnutrition and mistreatment.
Luis Felipe Gonsalez, the manager of Peru's National Forest and Wildlife Service, provided an update on Monday, May 15, stating that the sloth's condition is improving and has reached a stable state. However, continuous monitoring is necessary at this stage.
Over the next 15 to 30 days, the sloth will undergo comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation to prepare it for release back into its natural habitat next month, deep within the jungle.
