The prize distribution ceremony of the ‘Research Innovation Competition 2022’ was organized by the Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization of the University of Karachi. The event was held on Wednesday at the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences Auditorium, Karachi.
Commissioner Karachi Muhammad Iqbal Memon was the chief guest on this occasion. He informed the audience that around 60 percent of the country’s population consists of youth, who can play an important role in the development of Pakistan. “Pakistan is rich in all kinds of resources but still our exports are less than imports which is a matter of concern and one of the major reasons that our economy is weakening.” He believes that our young generation has the best creative ideas that can play an important role in the development of the country, so we should give them opportunities. He assured that opportunities would be provided to the youngsters but they have to work hard to make their name.
A student from the Department of Geology Muhammad Mahad Arif won the first prize for his prototype. His project was about the manufacturing of Limex pellets to avoid plastics and his project was supervised by Dr Adnan Khan. He informed the audience that the idea behind the project is to avoid the usage of toxic plastic products and bottles to make an eco-friendly environment. “We are manufacturing Limex pellets which are made of natural material and are recyclable and bio degree able. These Limex pellets can be used instead of plastic pellets or toxic polyethene’.” He received the cash prize of Rs50, 000/- from Commissioner Karachi Muhammad Iqbal Memon.
The second position was won by Wajiha Rehman Kazmi of the Department of Biotechnology, whose idea was “making a fabric that creates instant and constant cooling”. Her project was supervised by Dr Raheela, she received the prize of Rs30, 000/-.
The third position was won by Nida Baig of the Department of Biochemistry. She completed her project under the supervision of Professor Dr Shamim A. Qureshi. The project was based on Green Synthesis, Characterization, and Evaluation of Anti-diabetic Activity of Zinc oxide Nanoparticles from a Polyherbal Formulation: Diabetic Cure. Nida got Rs15, 000/- for winning the third position.
Meanwhile, the acting Registrar of the University of Karachi Professor Dr Maqsood Ali Ansari, Director ORIC Professor Dr Bilquees Gul, vice president Korangi Association of Trade and Industry Maheen Salman, and others also spoke on this occasion.
Professor Dr Maqsood Ali Ansari shared that those nations which have given topmost priorities to academia, creative research, and industries are at the top of the list of developed countries today. He observed that economic growth can be ensured through collaboration between educational institutions, industries, and the government.
Director ORIC Professor Dr Bilquees Gul urged that industries must come forward and ensure a positive and effective partnership with academia to address contemporary needs and problems to help our economy. Read More...
