Having gone all the way to penalties in the Africa Cup of Nations final just a month earlier, Egypt and Senegal had to be separated by yet another shootout in their World Cup qualification playoff, with Senegal booking their place in the winter tournament after Sadio Mane netted the winning penalty.
Egypt had won the first leg 1-0 in the first week of this international break, but Hamdi Fathi's fourth-minute own goal allowed the African champions to go level on aggregate.
From there, the pair played out a considerably more entertaining tie that the AFCON final had been.
Despite Senegal dominated the shot count by 24 to five, and bossing the possession stats, nothing could separate the two sides after 180 minutes, nor after extra time took them to 210 for the tie as a whole, and so it had to be another penalty shootout to split them.
Hosts Senegal went first from 12 yards and couldn't have had a worse start, with Kalidou Koulibaly failing to convert. Having waited to take the final kick at the AFCON final and not getting the chance, Mohamed Salah stepped up to give Egypt the lead but, remarkably, suffered the same fate as Koulibaly.
