The Santiago 2023 Pan American Games will be the largest multi-sport event ever held in Chile. From 20 October to 5 November, around 7,000 athletes from all over the continent will gather for a competition that for many of them will double as a qualifier for the Olympic Games Paris 2024. And the country is busy preparing the venues for the occasion.
The heart of these Pan Am Games will be the Parque Deportivo Estadio Nacional, one of the greatest legacies Santiago 2023 will leave. Around the historical coliseum, which hosted the 1962 FIFA World Cup final, there is now a multidisciplinary sports complex with 12 facilities that will house 20 sports during the Games.
At the feet of the Andes Mountains sits the Parque Peñalolén, a sports park that was built for the 2014 South American Games, which is recognisable from above thanks to the dome of its Velodrome, a symbol of Chilean Olympism. This site and its surroundings will host five sports in Santiago 2023.
O'Higgins Park, a large green zone in the centre of Santiago; San Cristóbal Metropolitan Park, one of the biggest urban parks in Latin America; and the beaches in Viña del Mar or Pichilemu, will also serve as settings for these Pan Am Games.
