Senegalese multi-instrumentalist and singer Majnun, born Djibril Sarr, delivered a captivating performance at the Kigali Cultural and Exhibition Village, headlining a live concert that showcased the richness of African culture. The event, organized by Rwanda Arts Initiative in partnership with Isaano and Africa in Colors, was part of the "Hewa Rwanda" music-led project, which aims to promote African culture on a global stage.
Majnun's theatrical performance, which included songs in his local language and English, conveyed powerful messages of decolonization, repatriation, and the quest for freedom. His setlist featured songs such as "Repatriation", "Mandingo's Fight", "Jeng Jeng", "The Black Magic-Sofas Sofas", and "Adam", which resonated deeply with the audience.
The concert also featured performances by local Rwandan artists, including Samy Kamanzi, Kaya Byinshi, Impakanizi, and Michael Makembe, who added their unique touch to the event. The collaborative spirit of the concert highlighted the collective effort to celebrate African skills and culture, creating an atmosphere of original sound and performance that the audience thoroughly enjoyed.
In a post-concert interview, Majnun emphasized the importance of African culture, stating that his songs aim to inspire Africans to reclaim their rights and shine brightly. Dorcy Rugamba, the visionary behind Rwanda Arts Initiative, reiterated that the concert was more than just entertainment, but a platform to showcase cultural wealth and bring people together. The event aimed to promote African culture on a global stage, celebrate diversity, and boost cultural tourism in Kigali.
