Short by Pedro Costa in the official selection of Cannes
The festival will screen As Filhas do Fogo , which is also the title of the multimedia show that the director created with the early music ensemble Os Músicos do Tejo.
This Monday, the Cannes Festival announced the films that will complement the official selection released on the 13th, and one of them is As Filhas do Fogo , by Pedro Costa, a short film interpreted by the singers Elizabeth Pinard, Alice Costa and Karyna Gomes.
Resulting from the homonymous project that the Portuguese filmmaker developed with the ensemble Os Músicos do Tejo – an interdisciplinary show that follows the saga of three young Cape Verdean sisters who arrive at a European port, fleeing an eruption of the volcano on the island of Fogo –, the film, which will be shown out of competition, is "a beautiful, strong, intriguing, inventive work, at the same time classic and modern, moving, a collective elegy and a political act", considered the artistic director of the festival, Thierry Frémaux , quoted in a statement by Clarão Companhia, which debuted in production with this short film by Pedro Costa .
It is the filmmaker's fifth appearance at the French festival. In 1994, almost 20 years ago, Casa de Lava was shown in the parallel section Un Certain Regard; in 2006, Juventude em Marcha reached official competition; and in 2007 and 2009 he was in the Directors' Fortnight, respectively with the short film Tarrafal – O Estado do Mundo and Ne Change Rien .
