Some 200 Peruvian protesters arrested for occupying university campus
Peruvian authorities have arrested some 200 demonstrators during the weekend after the March of the Four Suyos (Inca empire provinces) advanced on Lima -the so-called “Lima Takeover”- demanding President Dina Boluarte's resignation, in addition to fresh elections and a constituent assembly.
The protesters were taken into custody “in flagrante delicto” at the campus of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) where they had chosen to stay without any permission from university authorities.
After the arrests, the rioters who had traveled to Lima from various parts of Peru (hence the “suyos” name given to their movement) were transferred to the headquarters of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) Anti-Terrorism Directorate headquarters.
“Information was gathered on the request for police intervention made by the legal representative of the UNMSM invoking flagrante delicto, which was executed in the framework of the state of emergency decreed by the central government,” the Prosecution said in a statement.
Prime Minister Alberto Otárola explained that the PNP's intervention had been requested by the UNMSM.
After the arrests on Saturday morning, demonstrations still went on in the afternoon in various parts of Lima.
Peruvian media reported Sunday that relatives of the detainees Sunday visited the facilities where their loved ones were held to bring them food and water after many of them spent the night in isolation. Read More…
