Spain's best carnivals of 2022
Dust off your favourite costume from the wardrobe or improvise a new one, but above all, don't stay at home and bring out your most mischievous side. To help you enjoy them to the full, we've made a selection of the must-attend events at the best carnivals in Spain. Don't miss them!
Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

One of the oldest carnivals in Spain, with more than 5 centuries of history, is on the verge of becoming a Festival of International Tourist Interest. The pandemic has caused a change of dates but on 25th February we will be able to enjoy the opening speech of the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
What can we find in the next few days of the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria? To begin with, the final of the traditional murga competition will be on Saturday 5th March, followed the next day by the original canine carnival. The famous Drag Queen Gala can be seen on the 18th of March while the parade of the winners will be on Saturday the 19th. To end the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria there will be the burial of the sardine on Sunday the 20th of March.
Verín Carnival, in Ourense

Verín is a town in the southeast of Ourense, near the border with Portugal, and its entroido - Galician folk carnival - is one of the most famous in northern Spain. The most characteristic feature of its carnival is the "cigarrón", the curious short jacket costume with which its inhabitants dress during these days and which they finish off with a wooden mask painted in bright colours.
In 2022 the Carnival of Verín will undergo some changes due to the pandemic. There will be no mass celebrations and we will opt for the entroido festivities that take place during the day. To avoid unnecessary risks there will be no night orchestras but we will be able to enjoy the music of the charangas in the afternoon. Do not hesitate to drop by Verín and enjoy the most street edition of this entroido that ends on Sunday 6th March.
Cadiz Carnival

Cadiz Carnival is the greatest exponent of a city that takes to the streets en masse at this time of the year. The sound of the carnival whistle (also known as "kazoo") reigns throughout the city and fancy dress is the obligatory dress code.
In 2022, the pandemic conditions the celebrations, but instead of having one carnival, we can have two carnivals. Yes, as you can hear: between 26th February and 5th March the unofficial Carnival will be held, and between May and June we will have the official celebrations of the Cadiz Carnival, including the famous "chirigotas" contest. As you can see, anyone who doesn't enjoy this year's festival is because they don't want to, as there will be plenty of opportunities to do so.
Badajoz Carnival

Badajoz Carnival, recently named Festival of International Tourist Interest, is above all a street party. During these days in the city of Badajoz it is forbidden to walk the streets without a costume. Well, not forbidden, but don't walk around without a costume because you'll be branded as a freak.
What are the essential plans for this Badajoz Carnival? Pay attention, because everything is concentrated in five days. On Friday 25th February you can't miss the final of the famous "murgas" competition. On Sunday 27th you'll be able to see the big parade of comparsas and finally, we'll witness the burial of the sardine on Tuesday 1st March. Read More…
