Surigao City marked 40 years of Bonok-Bonok Festival
Surigao City celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Bonok-Bonok Maradjaw Karadjaw Festival, honoring the cultural and religious traditions associated with patron saint San Nicolas de Tolentino.
The term "Bonok-Bonok" signifies a "downpour," representing blessings, while "Maradjaw Karadjaw" means "very good" in the local dialect, symbolizing positivity and abundance.
The festival kicked off with a vibrant street dancing competition, with teams from Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat Islands participating in the Bonok-Bonok-Based and Festival of Festivals categories.
Mayor Pablo Yves Dumlao II highlighted the event as a reflection of the city's unity and resilience, urging residents to continue working toward a bright future.
Undersecretary Ferdinand Jumapao, representing Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, also emphasized the importance of cultural festivals in boosting tourism, showcasing Filipino culture, and sharing the country's rich heritage with the world.
