Switzerland Allocates CHF 300 Million to Bolster Schengen Borders
Switzerland is set to begin its significant contribution to the protection of the Schengen zone borders, starting August 1, 2024. This move comes as part of a larger commitment to support and strengthen the external borders of the Schengen area, encompassing 25 EU nations and four additional countries, including Switzerland.
Financial Commitment
Switzerland has budgeted CHF 300 million to be allocated from 2021 to 2027. This sum is aimed at reinforcing the external border security of the Schengen zone to prevent illegal entry.
The contribution amount is determined based on Switzerland's national GDP.
Funding Distribution
- External Border Protection: The bulk of the funds will go towards enhancing the security measures at the extensive land (8,000 km) and sea (43,000 km) borders of the Schengen zone.
- EU Information Systems: Approximately CHF 50 million of the received funds will be used to implement new EU information systems for monitoring entry and exit within the Schengen area.
- Zurich Airport: Part of the funds will also be allocated to upgrade and expand border control infrastructure at Zurich Airport.
The Schengen zone comprises 25 EU nations, excluding Romania and Bulgaria, and includes Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland. Additionally, microstates such as Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City are effectively part of the Schengen area.
The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) highlighted the significance of this financial contribution. "Our aim is to fortify the external borders of the Schengen zone, ensuring effective prevention of illegal entries," said an SEM spokesperson. The SEM also emphasized that these efforts are crucial for maintaining the security and integrity of the Schengen area, which facilitates free movement across member states.
This substantial financial commitment underscores Switzerland’s role in European security and cooperation. By enhancing border controls and integrating advanced monitoring systems, Switzerland aims to contribute significantly to the collective effort of safeguarding the Schengen zone's external boundaries.
