Taiwanese Family Drama ‘Old Fox’ Selected as International Oscar Submission
Taiwan's Ministry of Culture has chosen the family drama Old Fox as its official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2025 Oscars.
Directed by Hsiao Ya-chuan, who earned the Best Director award at last year's Golden Horse Film Awards for the film, Old Fox is a poignant exploration of social classes and human kindness set against the backdrop of late 1980s Taiwan.
The film tells the story of an 11-year-old boy living with his impoverished father, navigating the complexities of human nature while befriending his landlord, nicknamed Old Fox.
The Ministry of Culture praised the film as a "fable of the social classes amid social change and drastic economic impact of late 1980s Taiwan," noting its "profound analysis of humanity" through its storytelling and subtle depictions of daily life.
Old Fox was selected from a pool of 14 films and has garnered critical acclaim, winning several awards at the Golden Horse Film Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Akio Chen, Best Makeup and Costume Design, and Best Original Film Score. The cast also features child actor Bai Run-yin, Liu Kuan-Ting, and Eugenie Liu.
