Tola broke away from the lead pack in the last 8km, clocking 28:22 between 30K and 40K, and ran solo to win the 2022 World marathon gold in 2:05:37. His winning time smashed the previous record of 2:06:54 set by Kenyan Abel Kirui in 2009 in Berlin.
