Team titles go way of South Korea at Fencing World Championships

South Korea took gold in both the men's sabre and women's épée team events today at the Fencing World Championships, continuing their medal haul in Cairo.

Both teams entered their respective tournaments as top seeds at the Cairo Stadium Indoor Hall Complex.

The Olympic silver-medal-winning quartet of Choi In-jeong, Kang Young-mi, Lee Hye-in and new individual world champion Song Se-ra progressed through the rounds soundly, ending with a title to their name.

They defeated Ka Mong Chu, Kaylin Sin Yan Hsieh, Man Wai Vivian Kong and Yik Hei Coco Lin of Hong Kong 45-37 in the quarter-finals; and made the final with a 45-28 victory over fifth seeds Poland, with their team made up of Renata Knapik-Miazga, Magdalena Pawlowska, Kamila Pytka and Martyna Swatowska-Wenglarczyk.

Second seeds Italy met them in the final, with the quartet of Rossella Fiamingo, Federica Isola, Mara Navarria and Alberta Santuccio eliminating Switzerland's Pauline Brunner, Angeline Favre, Noemi Moeschlin and Laura Staehli by a 45-33 margin; before making the match for gold by winning 30-29 over France's Marie-Florence Candassamy, Josephine Jacques Andre Coquin, Auriane Mallo and Lauren Rembi.

The top seeds took gold, beating Italy 45-37 in the final.

In the men's sabre, Gu Bong-il, Kim Jung-hwan, Kim Jun-ho and Oh Sang-uk made the final for South Korea, first beating France's Bolade Apithy, Eliott Bibi, Sebastien Patrice and Maxime Pianfetti 45-39 in the quarter-finals.

They made the final with a 45-39 win against Germany's Raoul Bonah, Lorenz Kempf, Frederic Kindler and Matyas Szabo; meeting Hungary's Tamas Decsi, Csanad Gemesi, Andras Szatmari and Aron Szilagyi in the fight for gold. Read More…
