The Argentina Society collaborates with the South Africans for vibrant art exhibitions at Marks Park
The Argentina Society at Marks Park has been fostering a rich cultural exchange with South Africans through a series of vibrant art exhibitions. Oriana Perez Casanova, an active member of the society, shared how these monthly exhibitions, which started in March, bring together diverse talents from both communities. The aim, she explained, is to convey a positive message to the public while celebrating different art forms in a unique setting.
Casanova also spoke about how Argentine culture is kept alive within the expatriate community in South Africa. From speaking Spanish and enjoying traditional music to cooking Argentine dishes, she and others maintain a strong connection to their heritage. Events like monthly braais, hosted by the Argentinian Association, celebrate important national days, such as Independence Day, and introduce South Africans to Argentine customs, including selling mate, the country's traditional tea.
Many Argentine expatriates in South Africa are professionals like builders, architects, and engineers, but despite their professional commitments, they actively share their culture with locals. Casanova noted that South Africans have shown great interest in learning about Argentine traditions, such as enjoying empanadas and mate, which even her South African sister-in-law has come to appreciate.
Artist Kim Paxton, who participated in one of these exhibitions for the first time, expressed how welcoming the experience was. She strives to create warm and inviting art, aligning with the spirit of the cultural collaboration.
Looking forward, Casanova hopes for more opportunities for cultural exchange between Argentina and South Africa. She envisions both countries finding common ground to celebrate their respective cultures together, enhancing mutual understanding and shared experiences.
