The Best Ways to Travel Around in Denmark

Denmark has an excellent and efficient transportation system, making it easy to explore its cities, towns, and countryside. Here are some of the best ways to travel around in Denmark:

1. Trains

Denmark’s rail network is reliable and covers most parts of the country. The Danish State Railways (DSB) operates frequent trains connecting major cities like Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, and Aalborg. For traveling between these cities, the intercity trains are the best option. The S-tog (urban trains) serve the Copenhagen metropolitan area and are ideal for local travel.

2. Buses

Buses are another common and affordable way to get around Denmark, especially for short distances or rural areas where trains don’t reach. FlixBus and Graahundbus are popular long-distance bus services. In cities like Copenhagen and Aarhus, buses, including night buses, provide frequent service.

3. Bicycles

Denmark is a cyclist’s paradise, with bike lanes in all major cities and many smaller towns. Copenhagen in particular is famous for its cycling culture, and renting a bike is one of the most convenient and eco-friendly ways to explore the city. The country has well-maintained cycling routes, even for intercity travel, and bike rental shops are widely available.

4. Metro and Light Rail

In Copenhagen, the Copenhagen Metro is a highly efficient system with four lines that operate 24/7, connecting the city center with suburban areas and the airport. Light rail systems, such as Aarhus Letbane, serve other cities and make local travel quick and easy.

5. Ferries

Denmark consists of more than 400 islands, and ferries are a crucial part of transportation. Ferry services connect the larger islands, such as Zealand, Funen, and Bornholm, to the mainland and other islands. Scandlines and Mols-Linien are major ferry operators.

6. Car Rentals

While public transportation is extensive, renting a car offers more flexibility, especially for remote or rural areas. Denmark has an excellent road network, and major car rental companies like Hertz, Europcar, and Avis operate across the country. Parking is easy in most areas except Copenhagen, where it’s more limited and expensive.

7. Domestic Flights

For long-distance travel between cities like Copenhagen and Aalborg or Copenhagen and Billund, domestic flights can save time. SAS and Norwegian Air offer frequent flights, although domestic air travel is less common in such a small country.

The best mode of transport depends on your itinerary. Trains and bikes are ideal for eco-friendly travel, while buses and ferries provide more affordable options. If you prefer more freedom, consider renting a car for exploring Denmark’s scenic countryside.
