The Mortal Kombat franchise takes a step back in time with the announcement of Mortal Kombat 1
NetherRealm Studios has unveiled Mortal Kombat 1, which will fully utilize the capabilities of PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
This is not merely another installment continuing from where Mortal Kombat 11 left off. Instead, Mortal Kombat 1 serves as a soft reboot of the series, placing Liu Kang as a divine entity in the heavens. Although the trailer doesn't provide much insight into the story, it undeniably showcases impressive visuals and an abundance of gruesome head-smashing moments.
The existence of a new Mortal Kombat game has been known for some time. However, NetherRealm Studios decided to make an official announcement earlier than anticipated, prior to the upcoming PlayStation Showcase. The release date for Mortal Kombat 1 is set for September 19, 2023, with pre-orders available since May 19. Players who pre-order the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions will have access to a beta version in August.
In this new world shaped by the Fire God Liu Kang, players can expect "unexpected twists on classic rivalries and original backstories" for a diverse roster of iconic fighters, including Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, and many others.
Moreover, the series introduces the Kameo system this time around, although details regarding its full functionality have not been revealed yet. It is likely that the game will follow the trend of other fighting games by incorporating popular characters from various pop-culture sources into its roster over the course of the coming years.
