'The shocking thing my friends said when I told them I had COVID'
Despite doing everything I possibly could to avoid the virus for the last two years, I tested positive on Christmas Day.
I wasn't entirely shocked, to be honest. Here in Sydney, we certainly seem on course to fulfil the NSW Health Minister's prophecy that everyone in the state will probably get Omicron at some point.
The thing that did shock me, however, was the response from friends when I told them I had COVID: "Sorry to hear that, Hon, but would you mind I pop over and give you a hug, so I can get it too and just get this over with?"
I guess they don't call it the season of giving for nothing.
Until recently, the mere thought of being in the same room as someone with COVID was a little terrifying. But in a shocking turn of events, it seems many people are now 'ready', even willing, to get the virus. If you haven't already been infected with COVID, you're probably resigned to the fact you'll probably get it in the not-too-distant future. It seems inevitable.
A girlfriend told me on the weekend that she's not worried about getting COVID. She just doesn't want to get it in the next two weeks, because she's booked a health retreat for the end of January, and getting COVID now would really ruin her holiday.
Yep, this is where we're at. People aren't scared of COVID anymore — they just don't want it to interfere with their plans. And as someone who's just spent two weeks fighting off a 'moderate' case of COVID, I'm astounded that people have become so complacent.
I thankfully didn't end up in hospital, but it absolutely knocked me out. The three days after Christmas were a blur of splitting headaches, crazy coughing, runny nose, body aches, night sweats.
I felt chronic, crippling exhaustion like I've never experienced before. Dragging myself out of bed to walk the 10 steps to the bathroom was debilitating, and I lost all taste and smell for about a week. In summary: it wasn't fun, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
So how do we explain this bizarre shift in thinking when it comes to catching COVID? Why have we become so complacent? Read More…
