The Workshop Week of the Open Book Festival makes its highly anticipated comeback in June 2023
Open Book Festival's Workshop Week is set to make a triumphant return in June 2023, promising a stimulating series of workshops for writers. Taking place from the 5th to the 10th of June at the esteemed Bertha House in Mowbray, Cape Town, this six-day event is organized by the Open Book Festival.
In 2022, Workshop Week made its debut as a platform for aspiring and seasoned writers to engage in practical workshop sessions led by experienced mentors. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with sessions quickly reaching full capacity. Given the tremendous popularity of the event, it was only natural to bring it back for 2023, according to Frankie Murrey, the event curator for the Open Book Festival.
Esteemed facilitators will dedicate six days to sharing their expertise, equipping participants with invaluable skills and tools to enhance their writing journeys. Workshop Week is one of three major events planned for this year, with a special event for young readers held earlier in the year, followed by Workshop Week in June, and the flagship Open Book Festival scheduled for early September.
Murrey emphasizes that Open Book has always recognized the value of knowledge exchange and hopes that individuals will seize the opportunity to benefit from these sessions. This year, the event introduces multi-day workshops for the first time. Among them, "Ukuthula | Invoking Silence" is a three-day workshop designed to inspire and unleash creative writing that confronts gender-based violence. The second offering is "Life as a Work of Fiction" facilitated by Dawn Garisch from the Life Writing Collective, a captivating two-day workshop. The comprehensive program, which covers a range of topics such as memoirs, poetry, and short stories, can be accessed online. Due to limited availability, early booking is strongly advised to avoid disappointment.
Participants are required to commit to attending all days of the multi-day workshops. The realization of Workshop Week 2023 has been made possible through the generous support of the Department of Arts, Sports and Culture, and the Heinrich Boll Foundation.
