Top Dutch science grants of up to €1.5 million awarded to 34 leading researchers
The NWO, a Dutch institute for scientific research, recently bestowed Vici grants to 34 distinguished scientists in the fields of Natural, Applied, and Social Sciences. These grants will facilitate their research for the next five years. The selected group comprises 18 male and 16 female scientists, each of whom will receive a maximum of 1.5 million euros to "foster a new, innovative research direction and expand their research team."
Vici is one of the most significant personal scientific grants available in the Netherlands. This year's recipients cover a diverse range of topics in their research.
For example, one scientist is exploring whether fiction can foster citizenship and community. Another researcher is examining ways to replicate the energy-efficient techniques of the human brain for processing vast amounts of data.
In addition, Vici grants have been awarded to a study investigating how nerve and immune cells collaborate to deactivate pain, as well as a multidisciplinary approach to enhancing the decision-making abilities of self-governing robots.
The NWO bestows Vici grants on an annual basis. Last year, the institute received 266 applications for the 2023 grants, with 167 from men and 99 from women. Thirty-four of these proposals were approved.
