TrueBliss Star Defends Marla Kavanaugh Amid National Anthem Backlash
Megan Alataini, a member of the TV pop group TrueBliss, has come to the defense of soprano Marla Kavanaugh after her rendition of the New Zealand national anthem faced heavy criticism. Kavanaugh's performance took place before the All Blacks' test match against Fiji in San Diego on Saturday.
The reaction to her performance on social media was overwhelmingly negative, with one commenter describing it as “dreadful” and another calling it “the worst” they had seen. In response to these harsh critiques, Alataini took to Facebook to support Kavanaugh, condemning the criticism as both harsh and cruel.
“It’s also unfair to have a performer who is unfamiliar, inexperienced or unprepared perform it at such an auspicious occasion such as the All Blacks game in a world where social media critics are so rife and cruel,” Alatini said in her post. She added, “Let’s not be too harsh on the weekend's singer!! It’s a nerve-wracking gig - trust me!!”
Alatini emphasized the significance of the New Zealand national anthem, noting its precious and important status, and underscored the need for it to be treated with the mana it deserves on the international stage. Her supportive comments aim to shift the focus from harsh criticism to understanding the pressures faced by performers in such high-stakes situations.
