Tunisia Bans Smartphones in Schools: A Step Towards Improving the Educational Environment

In a decisive move to enhance discipline and address the rising issue of digital violence, the Ministry of Education in Tunisia has announced a ban on the possession and use of smartphones within schools and educational institutions. This decision follows a tragic incident that highlighted the severe consequences of online bullying, prompting urgent action to protect both students and teachers.

The ban comes in the wake of a heartbreaking event where a teacher tragically took his own life by self-immolation after being subjected to an online bullying campaign orchestrated by his students. The students had filmed a video of the teacher and shared it on social media, leading to devastating psychological repercussions. The Ministry of Education has issued a memorandum to its regional delegations, outlining specific directives for school and institute directors:

i. Prohibition of Smartphones: Students are to be informed that bringing smartphones to educational institutions is strictly prohibited for any reason.

ii. Parental Notification: Parents will be notified of this decision to ensure their awareness and support.

iii. Filming Restrictions: The filming of any activities within school premises is forbidden unless prior permission is granted by the school principal.
