Tunisia Signs Agreements to Grant 5G Licenses

Tunisia is set to embrace fifth-generation (5G) technology after signing agreements to grant 5G licenses to telecommunications companies. The signing ceremony, held at the Prime Ministry headquarters in Kasbah, was attended by Prime Minister Kamel Madouri and key industry representatives. This marks a significant step forward in Tunisia’s ambition to advance its digital economy and establish itself among technologically advanced nations.

Minister of Communication Technologies, Sofiene Hemissi, emphasized that this initiative marks a "qualitative leap forward" for Tunisia, positioning the country among advanced nations in the realm of digital technology. The project is part of a broader strategy aimed at achieving economic growth through high-value digitalization and fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors.

Hemissi highlighted that the implementation of 5G technology will not only enhance connectivity but also pave the way for additional projects aimed at extending internet coverage to all regions, particularly remote areas. Currently, Tunisia boasts an impressive internet coverage rate of 96%, with plans to address the remaining 4% in the next phase.

The Tunisian government recognizes the right to access networks as a constitutional right for all citizens. The outlined action plan indicates that Tunisia is set to begin leveraging 5G technology starting in 2025, following the completion of necessary technical requirements.

Lasaâd Ben Dhiab, CEO of Tunisie Telecom, expressed optimism about the positive impact of 5G technology on accelerating digital transformation in the country. He noted that the technology will enable ultra-fast connectivity and enhance telecommunication services, which are crucial for both individuals and businesses.

Ben Dhiab also pointed out that Tunisie Telecom has laid the technical groundwork for the project, thanks to a dedicated team of experts. This initiative is seen as a vital step in strengthening Tunisia's digital infrastructure and delivering high-quality telecommunications services tailored to the needs of its citizens.

Mansoor Rashid Al Khater, CEO of Ooredoo Tunisia, echoed the sentiment of progress, describing the signing of the agreement as a positive step forward. He emphasized the importance of productive collaboration between the company and all stakeholders to provide cutting-edge internet services that meet the evolving demands of Tunisians.

The signing of 5G licenses in Tunisia represents a pivotal moment in the country's journey towards digital advancement. With ambitious plans to enhance connectivity and ensure internet access for all citizens, Tunisia is poised to embrace the benefits of 5G technology, fostering economic growth and improving the quality of life for its people. As the nation prepares for the rollout of this transformative technology, the collaboration between government and telecommunications companies will be crucial in realizing the full potential of Tunisia's digital future.
