Twitter's Trust and Safety Head Resigns.
Ella Irwin, the head of trust and safety at Twitter, announced her resignation from the social media platform on Thursday. This decision comes as Twitter has been under fire for its inadequate measures against harmful content since Elon Musk's acquisition in October. Irwin, who joined Twitter in June 2022, took charge of the trust and safety team in November, succeeding Yoel Roth. Her responsibilities included overseeing content moderation.
When contacted via email, Twitter's response was an automated reply featuring a poop emoji. Irwin declined to provide further comments, and Elon Musk has not yet responded to requests for comment.
The departure of Irwin coincides with Twitter's struggle to retain advertisers, as brands are cautious about their association with inappropriate content on the platform.
Earlier this month, Musk announced the appointment of Linda Yaccarino, the former chief of advertising at NBCUniversal, as Twitter's new CEO.
According to a report by Fortune, it appears that Irwin's internal Slack account has been deactivated.
Since Musk's acquisition, Twitter has significantly reduced costs and laid off numerous employees, including those involved in efforts to combat harmful and illegal content, safeguard election integrity, and promote accurate information on the platform.
Musk has introduced a feature called Community Notes, allowing users to provide additional context to tweets, as a means to combat misinformation on Twitter.
Furthermore, Twitter is facing increasing scrutiny from regulatory bodies concerning its moderation practices. The company withdrew from a voluntary agreement with the European Union to address disinformation while affirming its commitment to comply with forthcoming internet regulations in the EU.
Thierry Breton, the EU industry chief, warned Twitter last week that it cannot evade legal obligations in the EU after withdrawing from the voluntary agreement.
