Ugandan Film ‘I am Much More’ Premieres at MIFF
The Ugandan film "I Am Much More" has made its world premiere at the 2024 Marbella International Film Festival (MIFF) in Spain, marking a significant achievement for Uganda’s film industry. Taking place from October 2 to 6, 2024, the film is the first from Uganda to be selected for the festival, which chose it from a pool of 600 entries.
"I Am Much More" tells the story of children from Katanga, one of the largest slums in Kampala, and highlights their journey to access education with the help of Help Africa, a partner of Rotary District 9213. The film's main character, Prossy Nabasumba, is from one of the poorest families in Katanga and, thanks to sponsorship from the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), she has traveled to Marbella to attend the festival.
Nyombi Thembo, Executive Director of the UCC, emphasized the importance of supporting creatives, acknowledging their vital role in producing content that drives communication and broadcasting. He said, “Content creation is very important,” recognizing that the UCC actively fosters the film industry through its initiatives, including film festivals.
Nyombi also mentioned that the UCC plans to further support the film industry by encouraging talent from a young age, beginning in primary schools. Rotary District 9213 Director General, Anna Nkutu, praised the UCC for its sponsorship, highlighting the importance of providing opportunities for individuals like Nabasumba to showcase their talents internationally and promote Uganda’s growing film industry.
The Marbella International Film Festival is renowned for bringing together filmmakers and artists from across the globe to celebrate and showcase their work, and "I Am Much More" inclusion is a significant milestone for Uganda on the international stage.
