Ultra-modern housing facility commissioned for the Police
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially inaugurated 312 state-of-the-art housing units for the Ghana Police Service in Kwabenya, near Accra, on Wednesday.
This modern facility marks the completion of the initial phase of a larger housing project at the Kwabenya barracks, which aims to redevelop the surrounding 80-acre land near Kotoka International Airport into a contemporary commercial hub. The government's ambitious urban renewal program focuses on revitalizing key areas in major cities across the country.
The construction of this new facility, designed to accommodate the Airport Police barracks, was made possible through a collaborative effort between several entities, including the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Lands Commission, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, and the Unique Development Company, a private developer.
During the commissioning ceremony, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the government's unwavering dedication to providing suitable housing and essential facilities for the nation's security personnel. He emphasized that the government's priority is to improve the welfare and enhance the capabilities of security personnel to effectively serve the country.
The President acknowledged the significant progress made since 2017 in addressing Ghana's housing deficit, which currently stands at two million units. However, rapid urbanization continues to exert immense pressure on land resources, leading to the degradation of prime lands, particularly in urban areas.
President Akufo-Addo stressed the importance of continuous investment in infrastructure, essential services, and improved living conditions to build a modern and prosperous Ghana, even in the face of global economic challenges. He emphasized the need to optimize land resources, particularly with the World Bank's projection that Ghana's urban population will reach 72% by 2035. This presents both a unique challenge and an opportunity to develop innovative solutions to the growing demand for housing, infrastructure, and public services in major cities across the country.
To address these challenges, the government launched an ambitious urban renewal program, led by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Lands Commission. The program aims to redevelop key areas in major cities, including the Kumasi Sector 18, Marine Drive Tourism Development Project, and Takoradi Beach Road Redevelopment Scheme.
President Akufo-Addo called upon the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Lands Commission, and the Unique Development Company to expedite the completion of the remaining 192 housing units and additional facilities that constitute the second phase of the project.
He expressed his appreciation to all those involved in the project, noting that it marks a significant step towards revitalizing the Jubilee City enclave and giving a fresh look to the capital.
The President reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to realizing the project's vision for a prosperous and inclusive Ghana, expressing confidence that, with divine guidance and support, the goal will be achieved.
Dr. George Akufo Dampare, the Inspector-General of Police, extended gratitude to the President for the government's commitment to improving the welfare of the Ghana Police Service. He assured the President that the housing facility would be well-maintained and preserved for future generations.
The Kwabenya barracks project features one- and two-bedroom self-contained flats equipped with modern amenities. In addition to comfortable homes for police officers and their families, the project includes a school with state-of-the-art facilities, a clinic, an astroturf football field, a tennis court, a standby generator, a police station, a fuel-filling station, a workshop enclave, and other essential amenities.
